We are pleased to announce that our replacement band for the Bristol a4uEvents on the 20th July will be “The Suspects”
Formed in Bristol in the early nineties, the Suspects’ blend of energetic stage performance coupled with frontman Russ Lawrence’s gravely vocals and lovable stage presence has earned the band a loyal, almost fanatical local following. Never a band to promote themselves or take things too seriously the last few years have been an amazing time for them; ‘discovered’ by Womad originator Thomas Brooman the band has moved onto the national, then international stage. Top billing performances at Womad, Rivermead UK and a headlining slot in Las Palmas to an audience of 18,000 propelled them to a position none of the band ever dreamed of!
2006 was the band’s biggest year to date, with top slots at Camel Rock in the Scillies, two more Womad trips as well as the coveted New Year’s Eve Gig at the Bristol Fleece.
An eight piece band, the Suspects line up includes a classic three piece horn section, and a rock solid rhythm section consisting of guitar, bass, drums and Hammond. Famously, the band have no set list and large sections of the show are improvised every night ensuring every gig is different – this a marked and refreshing change from most other bands and perhaps goes some way towards explaining their ability to fill a big stage and entertain a big crowd in a way that few other soul acts seem able. In essence, it’s a stonking, non stop, old school, soul revue show from a band who really mean it. The Suspects are a bunch enthusiasts who know what Soul music should sound like – Rocking, Raw and in your face!
